Dutch Design Week

This project is part of a collective exhibition titled Disclosure, organised by Isola Design Group.

During the 2024 edition of Dutch Design Week, STRYD presents Bertrand and Jacqueline, respectively a chair and a coffee table.

Bertrand by STRYD is inspired by the iconic Sedia 1 chair by Italian artist Enzo Mari. During his exhibitions, Enzo Mari encouraged his visitors to build Sedia 1 themselves using materials and plans provided. This would help the audience understand the object for what it is, as opposed to what it appears to be. Bertrand is conceived on the same principle.

Thus, functional elements such as the degree of the seat and the degree of the backrest, as well as structural elements such as the assembly techniques and the frame around the seat, are highlighted in a formal visual language.

During the exhibition, attendees will be encouraged to build their own Bertrand chairs. I will provide all necessary tools and materials, guiding them through the assembly process. This interactive experience allows participants to engage directly with the design, gaining insights into its structural and formal considerations.

Jacqueline by STRYD is a two layered coffee table inspired by the formal and structural elements of the Bertrand chair. The framed sheets assembled with dowels assure the table’s structural integrity. In the spirit of all objects by STRYD, Jacqueline is designed to outlive the generation that she was built by.

In addition to the assembly post for Bertrand, Jacqueline offers a discussion area where visitors can be seated around a table. Several books on design, art and architecture will be present as a means to invite the audience. The interactive nature of the exhibition is meant to engage visitors by stimulating their understanding of design practices for furniture.

Through this project, I hope to proffer a more intuitive and processual understanding of design and creation.
